Car oil change - filling new oil filter before screwing it in?

I've always put oil on the gasket with my finger, but I've never really thought to fill up the filter with oil before screwing it on until I heard someone mention doing that recently. I understand that the engine won't have any oil to pull from the filter on the first start up for a short while (I've always assumed the duration would be negligible). How long is the engine starved of oil on the first start up without filling the filter? How much wear have I been causing? Or is this just kind of an obsessive gearhead thing to do?Car oil change - filling new oil filter before screwing it in?its not really gonna matter as long as you keep your car well maintencened. no worries unless you are like serriously into racing...like doing an oil change and then going to go drag the 1/4 mile. If not don't worryCar oil change - filling new oil filter before screwing it in?just very briefly, not enough to matter on most cars. I do make it a habit though just from old school habits.Car oil change - filling new oil filter before screwing it in?So a typical engine idles at 600 - 900 rpm and at startup revs to 1500 for a moment. How long would you add up the total number of RPMs over a motors life that it ran without oil while it primed its filter. It seems it would add up to a significant amount so I fill it first.Car oil change - filling new oil filter before screwing it in?I always pour little in the filter that way its preped you never knowCar oil change - filling new oil filter before screwing it in?who wouldnt it doesnt hurtCar oil change - filling new oil filter before screwing it in?If your vehicle has a turbo, especially turbo diesels that have large filters, it's good practice to prime the filter first. If not, you're talking about a fraction of a second, not long enough to cause concern. It has been proven that the biggest problem isn't actually lack of lubrication, it's the corrosive acids created during combusion. Oil carries away those acids. So, another way to prime the filter is to disconnect or disable the ignition coil and crank the engine. By doing this, there is no combustion.
