Is the expensive synthetic oil change service a waste of money for an older car that burns oil?

I live in Ohio and have an older vehicle. 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis. Pretty positive the car isn't leaking oil (likely burning it). Though I don't see any smoke, so maybe it leaks. I change the oil every 6 months. For the last few years it ALWAYS runs out of oil between changes. I'm new at this and have been remembering to check the dipstick and add oil. Should I go longer between oil changes since I'm adding new (clean) oil? If not, why? How often does the fuel filter need changing? Am I wasting my money paying $40-$50 for the expensive synthetic oil change service? Is the expensive synthetic oil change service a waste of money for an older car that burns oil?You should definitely resolve your loss of engine oil problem before using a synthetic oil. You are however, taking the best possible action by keeping check on your oil level. Synthetic oil is used to prevent the types of problems you are describing. Save the money from the synthetic oil change service and use it to have your oil loss problem repaired. Once resolved, then consider changing to a synthetic oil.

The fuel filter generally needs to be changed once a year on high mileage vehicles. Is the expensive synthetic oil change service a waste of money for an older car that burns oil?I believe you are wasting money. Synthetic oil will also make oil leaks worse. I learned this by calling and talking to a rep at Mobil 1.Is the expensive synthetic oil change service a waste of money for an older car that burns oil?Yes indeed it is a waste of your money buying Synthetic oil what you need to buy is High Mileage oil. Most old companies have a high mileage oil now. Valvoline and all other name brand oils are good.Is the expensive synthetic oil change service a waste of money for an older car that burns oil?i own a 1994 crown victoria that has the same engine and does that i never change the oil in it because it always run out or burn up so yes it would be a waste to put synthetic in there since its not going to stay in there anyways just change the oil filter every so often no need to change the oilIs the expensive synthetic oil change service a waste of money for an older car that burns oil?yes because if it,s burning oil then it,s going to burn the high price oil the same as the cheap brand. in your case i would just buy the cheap oil like dollar general and change the oil filter until you can figure out where the oil is going to. here,s a thought.look under the valve pans.maybe the drain holes are clogged up.Is the expensive synthetic oil change service a waste of money for an older car that burns oil?I would just use a good conventional oil not synthetic. 10-40 and keep changing at regular intervals ( 4-5000) miles checking regularly. adding as needed. fuel filters every 20,000- 30,000 miles. Is the expensive synthetic oil change service a waste of money for an older car that burns oil?The oil change interval is the same as when the engine is in good condition. If you don't change the oil the sludge will build up, as I saw in my mother's car that went through a quart of oil every hundred miles. I suppose the gunk that settles into the pan never gets burned and just builds up. And after all, only oil that has made it through the filter (leaving behind everything the filter holds out) gets leaked or burned.

I agree about the value of a high mileage oil for a worn out engine (but not for a high mileage engine that is not burning oil). Synthetic would definitely be a waste of money.

Unless you have been having trouble with dirty gas, changing the fuel filter every five years is plenty. I have never personally seen a blocked fuel filter on a fuel injected engine, but lots of them on carbureted engines. Injector fuel filters are generally much bigger. Is the expensive synthetic oil change service a waste of money for an older car that burns oil?yes if it leak it or burns it no reason to add high price oil

kind of late to be worrying about protection now

a heavier grade oil might slow it slow

say you use 5w30

go to 10w30

changer filter more important than changing the oil but should do both at same time

20 dollar oil change

5000 to 8000 miles with any oil type

if your adding a lot of oil waste of time to change it say moe than a quart between oil changes your changing oil by adding and thats a sign its about all over withIs the expensive synthetic oil change service a waste of money for an older car that burns oil?Use the cheaper oil but one word of caution.

Condensation in the crankcase adds a certain amount of water to the oil and never changing your oil will cause the amount of water to build, especially if you don't take a couple of hour trip to burn off the water.

I would change oil at least every year.Is the expensive synthetic oil change service a waste of money for an older car that burns oil?For the most part your wasting your money when it costs about $15-$20 to do it yourself, Also you should be putting high mileage oil in your car which will help clean your valves, and you should not wait longer between oil changes...Just because your putting new oil in your car, doesn't let all the nasty stuff collecting in your oil pan out...If your car is burning oil your valves are sticking or oil is getting past the piston rings and burning....
