How do you change the oil filter on a 2007 Softail without getting oil everywhere?

I have an 07 softail standard and I can't seem to find a technique to get the oil filter off without getting oil everywhere.How do you change the oil filter on a 2007 Softail without getting oil everywhere?I drill a hole in the edge of mine and place a piece of cardboard under the end and let it drain into the pan before i remove it.Just drill it where ever it's handy to reach then use the filter wrench to turn it so the hole is at the bottom.You can use a center punch if you don't have a drill.

sooo you're just wasting your time cleaning the oil off the engine because its going to leak out somewhere else.
