Oil breaks down after time and should be replaced at regular intervals - even if the bike hasn't been run, oil goes bad from just sitting.
Spark plugs give the most problems at initial start up.
Bikes that old, the rubber parts in the carbs deteriorate over time - a carb clean would be a good place to start.
Check the air cleaner for blockage.
Next would be a valve adjustment.Yamaha xj600 oil and spark plug change?Bought a '1996 Yamaha XJ600 (first bike) a few months ago. I could get it to start, but couldn't get it past 2nd gear w/o it sputtering out! Had the carbs cleaned %26amp; after MUCH searching replaced an old line that had nearly invisible pin pricks in that decreased the pressure. Runs like a CHAMP now!

Yamaha xj600 oil and spark plug change?Oil, oil filter and spark plugs - must do.Clean the carbs - you can and probably should do this, depending on how long the bike stood for before you bought it.
$250 - if you not willing to spend so little to get it going well, maybe you shouldn't wait till after the season to sell it, get rid of it now. You either want it going well, or you don't want it.
Good Luck
